How the calculation works

The formula is one line: minutes = words ÷ words per minute (WPM). A 2,000-word speech at 130 WPM takes 2,000 ÷ 130 = 15.4 minutes, or 15 minutes 23 seconds. To size a script, reverse it: words = minutes × WPM. A 5-minute talk at 130 WPM needs about 650 words.

Anything separated by spaces or line breaks counts as one word, as in most word processors, so hyphenated words and numbers count once. The answer is only as good as the WPM you choose, so the table shows several rates and lets you change them.

Speaking vs reading rates

Speaking. The presets are 110, 130 and 160 WPM. These are typical values, not measurements, so treat them as assumptions you can edit. Your pace depends on the room, the topic and how well you know the material. About 150 WPM is often quoted for relaxed conversation, but we could not trace it to a primary source, so we treat it as a rough guide.

Reading. The reading figures come from a 2019 review of reading rate by Marc Brysbaert, published in the Journal of Memory and Language. Across 190 studies, adults read English silently at about 238 WPM for non-fiction and 260 WPM for fiction. Across 77 studies, reading aloud averaged 183 WPM. These are averages: children, older adults and second-language readers tend to be slower.

Silent-reading rates tell you how long a text takes to read. They do not predict a talk, because your audience hears you at your speaking pace.

Tips for timing a speech or presentation

  • Time yourself once. Read 200 words aloud at your normal pace and note the seconds. Your WPM is 12,000 divided by those seconds. Enter it as the custom pace.
  • Leave room for pauses. Pauses, laughter and slide changes use time. As a rule of thumb, plan for about 10 percent fewer words: roughly 1,170 instead of 1,300 for a 10-minute slot at 130 WPM.
  • Count only what you say. Slide text is not spoken, so leave it out. Budget slides by time instead, such as one to two minutes per slide when each carries one idea.
  • Plan for the average. If the slot is strict, write to the average or slow rate and treat a faster delivery as spare time.
  • Hear it, then rehearse aloud. The voice preview helps you feel the pace, but a speech synthesizer does not breathe or pause like you. Rehearse with a timer.
